We failed them: New data shows Hispanic residents disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 in 2020

PENDLETON — New data released by the Umatilla County Public Health Department shows what was long understood but had yet to be disclosed — Hispanic residents have been disproportionately infected with COVID-19 in the county. Residents reporting Hispanic ethnicity accounted for 41% of Umatilla County’s total COVID-19 cases in 2020, compared with 34% from non-Hispanic residents and 25% from residents whose ethnicity was unknown, according to a report released by the health department this week. In addition, the county’s Hispanic population tested positive at a rate approximately three times higher than non-Hispanic residents in 2020, the data shows. “We failed them,” said Jose Garcia, chair of the Hispanic Advisory Committee in Hermiston. “We failed some communities. Columbia City Council sweetens Swift incentives

COLUMBIA (MISSOURIAN)- Swift Prepared Foods has another $2.3 million worth of incentives to build its new Italian meats plant in northeast Columbia. The Columbia City Council on Monday night unanimously agreed to spend $1.3 million to extend a sewer line to the potential Swift site at 5008 Paris Road. It also approved an economic development rider that would forgive the company, and future industrial suitors, up to $1 million in electric bills over five years if they employ at least 200 people full time at wages above the Boone County average. The Boone County Commission, Columbia Public Schools and other taxing entities already have approved Chapter 100 incentives for Swift, which is considering whether to build in two phases a $185 million Italian meats plant. The plant would create 251 full-time jobs with an annual payroll of $13.23 million.

India s industrial production down 1 6% year-on-year in January

Economy > Economy - general 16 March 2021 Industrial production in the country declined by 1.6 per cent year-on-year in January2021, despite the 0.4 per cent growth in real GDP recorded in fiscal third quarter (October-December 2020-21), belying the government’s claim of the beginning of a broad-based economic recovery.   Industrial output had risen by 1.6 per cent in December, according to revised estimates. The decline in industrial production has badly affected the manufacturing sector, which has over 77 per cent weightage in the index of industrial production (IIP), contracting by 2 per cent, against the 2.1 per cent growth recorded in December 2020. The data points to recovery still being patchy and the rising covid cases could cast a shadow over the momentum in coming months.
